Lockheed Martin Considers C-130J Assembly in India Amidst Military Transport Aircraft Acquisition
Lockheed Martin is evaluating the establishment of a final assembly line for its C-130J Super Hercules aircraft in India, coinciding with India's plan to procure approximately 80 new military transport aircraft. This investment would mark Lockheed's first assembly facility outside the U.S. and aligns with India's emphasis on domestic manufacturing.
Currently, India operates 12 C-130Js, which support special operations and humanitarian missions. Lockheed's existing joint ventures with Tata Group have contributed to a significant local supply chain, with over 500 Indian suppliers involved.
This move would bolster Lockheed's presence in India and support the country's goal of becoming a global defense manufacturing hub. Additionally, the ongoing delays in the Tejas Mk1A induction into the Indian Air Force, linked to engine supply issues, underscore challenges in India's defense procurement.
