Long Beach Launches Zero-Emission Trash Truck Pilot Program
Long Beach has introduced two electric trash trucks as part of a pilot program aimed at assessing the feasibility of a fully zero-emission fleet. This initiative aligns with the city's sustainability goals and addresses regulatory compliance under the Advanced Clean Fleets mandate.

Long Beach has initiated a pilot program with two electric trash trucks to evaluate their operational viability compared to the existing compressed natural gas (CNG) fleet. Metrics such as tonnage capacity, operational range per charge, and route completion effectiveness will be assessed to inform potential future fleet transitions.
Currently, the city operates 89 refuse vehicles, predominantly CNG, and has 42 additional CNG trucks on order. The cost of electric trucks is significantly higher, averaging $854,000 each, compared to $464,476 for CNG vehicles. This pilot is part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainability while addressing logistical and financial challenges, including the necessary charging infrastructure.
