LR, HHI, KSOE Collaborate on Hybrid Electric LNG Carrier Design
Lloyd's Register, HHI, and KSOE have initiated a joint development project for a hybrid electric LNG carrier design to enhance fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The project, signed on June 2 at Posidonia 2026, focuses on a 185,000 cbm vessel, establishing technical frameworks for broader market adoption.

Lloyd's Register, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have entered a joint development project to design a hybrid electric LNG carrier. The agreement was signed on June 2, 2026, during Posidonia.
The project will enhance safety verification and system architecture for the vessel’s propulsion system, while also developing technical requirements to support the adoption of hybrid technologies in the LNG market. Insights from this collaboration are expected to influence advancements in electric propulsion and fuel cell integration. This initiative may set a precedent for future projects focused on low-carbon vessel designs.
