L&T Withdraws from Esplanade Station Construction for Purple Line in Kolkata
Larsen & Toubro has withdrawn from constructing the Purple Line's Esplanade station due to land acquisition issues. RVNL will reissue tenders, having struggled for five years to secure the site from BC Roy Market traders, who demand written assurances from the Army regarding their relocation. Construction was supposed to begin in 2023, but key land remains unavailable despite other preparations. L&T continues work on other stations along the line.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has backed out of the Purple Line's Esplanade station construction due to unresolved land acquisition timelines. RVNL, overseeing the 14km Joka-Esplanade corridor, will reissue tenders for the station.
The project has faced five years of struggles to clear the site occupied by BC Roy Market traders, who are demanding written assurances from the Army for their relocation. Construction was set to start in 2023, but the required land is still not available. L&T remains committed to building other stations, including Victoria Memorial and Park Street.
