Lubbock Requests Permit Extension for Lake Seven Reservoir Project Amid Federal Approval Wait
Lubbock is requesting a permit extension from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the Lake Seven reservoir project while awaiting federal approval from the Army Corps of Engineers. The project, aimed at providing 12 million gallons of water daily as part of Lubbock's long-term water strategy, is expected to begin construction by 2029, with water extraction starting in 2032.

The city of Lubbock is seeking an extension from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the Lake Seven reservoir project, as it awaits federal permit approval from the Army Corps of Engineers. The existing state permit, issued in 2024, mandates that construction begins within two years.
Lubbock's Assistant City Manager, Erik Rejino, indicated that a draft application will be submitted to the Corps soon, with expectations to secure the federal permit within two years. The Lake Seven project, planned since 2006, aims to provide 12 million gallons of water daily and is part of Lubbock's 100-year water strategy.
The city currently relies on groundwater and surface water and aims to enhance local water sources for resilience. Construction is anticipated to commence by 2029, with water extraction from Lake Seven beginning by 2032.
