Maersk Completes First Voyage Powered by 100% Ethanol, Advancing Shipping Decarbonization
Maersk has successfully completed its first voyage powered entirely by ethanol, marking a significant advance in the shipping industry's decarbonization efforts. This development could drive demand for ethanol as a scalable marine fuel, despite existing supply chain and environmental challenges.

In the first quarter of 2026, Maersk completed its inaugural voyage powered entirely by 100% ethanol, enhancing its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. This milestone follows previous trials with ethanol-methanol blends, confirming the fuel's safe integration into marine operations.
The global shipping sector, which generates approximately 2% to 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, is under pressure to reduce emissions by at least 20% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero by 2050. However, significant supply chain concerns persist, particularly regarding the logistics of ethanol distribution and its environmental impact. The trial emphasizes the necessity for scalable low-emission fuels and the importance of maritime infrastructure amidst tightening regulations.
