MAHAGENCO Plans 12 GW Renewable Energy Capacity Expansion by 2035 Amidst Decarbonization Goals
MAHAGENCO plans to expand its renewable energy capacity by 12 GW by 2035, raising its renewable share from 24% to 56% while reducing thermal power's contribution from 76% to 46%. The initiative supports Maharashtra's Net Zero target by 2047 and includes modernization efforts for existing thermal assets. However, the company faces challenges, particularly with stalled projects like the 105 MW Erai Floating Solar Park.

MAHAGENCO, Maharashtra's largest state power generator, aims to add 12 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2035, increasing its share of renewables from 24% to 56%. The company plans to reduce thermal power's share from 76% to 46% by 2035 as part of the state's Net Zero target by 2047.
MAHAGENCO's current energy mix is 14 GW, with significant reliance on thermal sources. The company has initiated modernization of aging thermal assets, including the commissioning of Bhusaval 6 (660 MW) and plans for Koradi (2x660 MW), expected to complete by 2029.
Additionally, MAHAGENCO has partnered with NTPC for the Sinnar thermal plant (1,350 MW), aiming for operational readiness within 8-12 months. However, challenges persist in floating solar projects, exemplified by the stalled 105 MW Erai Floating Solar Park, highlighting systemic issues in Maharashtra's renewable deployment.
