Malaysia Generates 40,000 Tonnes of Daily Waste; Government Launches Recycling Initiative
Malaysia produces approximately 40,000 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with over 30% being food waste. The National Circular Economy Council has been established to enhance waste management and sustainability efforts, including a recycling initiative at AEON malls that could divert 6,000 tonnes of waste annually if implemented broadly. The initiative, in partnership with Tetra Pak and KPT Recycle, aims to strengthen recycling infrastructure and introduce new waste reduction policies.

Malaysia generates about 40,000 metric tonnes of solid waste each day, with food waste comprising over 30%, or 12,000 tonnes. The Housing and Local Government Minister emphasized the alarming nature of these figures and the need for better waste management practices.
The National Circular Economy Council has been created to promote sustainability, launching a recycling initiative across 27 AEON malls that could potentially divert 6,000 tonnes of waste annually if expanded. A pilot project collected over 400kg of cartons in eight months.
New policies will also be introduced to reduce waste entering drainage systems. This initiative, in collaboration with Tetra Pak and KPT Recycle, is part of Malaysia's movement towards a low-carbon circular economy.
