Malaysia Targets High-Value Space Tech Development for Economic Growth
The Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) emphasizes the need for Malaysia to focus on high-value space technology to enhance its role in the global space economy, aiming to increase contributions to RM10 billion by 2030 and create 5,000 jobs. The strategy involves strengthening the downstream segment and pursuing technological sovereignty through public-private partnerships and international collaborations.

Malaysia aims to boost its space economy by concentrating on high-value technologies, with projections of contributions reaching RM10 billion by 2030 and the creation of 5,000 jobs. According to the Malaysian Space Agency, about 79 local companies are currently involved in space-related activities, contributing RM6.21 billion to the economy.
The country is focusing on the downstream segment, specifically using satellite data for agriculture, disaster management, and security, while planning to develop capabilities in midstream and upstream activities. A significant initiative is the National Remote Sensing Satellite Development Project, targeting a satellite launch by 2028 or 2029. MYSA is enhancing local technological capacity through public-private partnerships and seeks to position Malaysia as a key player in the Southeast Asian space sector.
