Malaysia to Receive Four Leased AW149 Helicopters by 2027
The Malaysian Army will receive four AW149 helicopters through a 15-year lease starting next year, enhancing military aviation capabilities. This leasing strategy aims to improve procurement effectiveness and resource management while ensuring operational readiness.

The Malaysian Army is set to receive four Leonardo AW149 helicopters under a 15-year leasing program, with anticipated service entry by August 2027. This agreement, signed on December 19, 2024, with Weststar Aviation, forms part of a larger US$3.5 billion deal for up to 28 helicopters, including allocations for the Royal Malaysian Air Force and other agencies.
The leasing approach allows for quicker access to new technology while transferring maintenance responsibilities to the lessor. Additionally, plans for procuring four more helicopters were announced during the Army's 93rd anniversary event in March. This strategy could address ongoing operational requirements while managing costs effectively.
