Mansfield Implements Massachusetts' First Comprehensive Data Center Zoning Bylaw
Mansfield, Massachusetts has enacted a zoning amendment restricting data center operations to preserve local resources. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to manage the potential impact of large-scale data centers on infrastructure and community.
Mansfield's Annual Town Meeting on May 5 approved a zoning amendment that imposes strict regulations on data centers, making it the first town in Massachusetts to adopt such a bylaw. The new rules permit only Tier I data centers, limited to two megawatts of electricity, in designated industrial areas under special permit.
Larger Tier II and Tier III facilities are prohibited to safeguard the local infrastructure. The bylaw includes a detailed compliance process requiring engineering evaluations of noise, water, and air quality. The town's electric utility's management was central to crafting safeguards against high-energy users, reflecting a balanced approach to economic development and community resource protection.
