MARAD Opens Applications for Centers of Excellence to Boost U.S. Maritime Workforce
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has opened applications for its Centers of Excellence program, aimed at training future maritime workers amid declining shipbuilding capacity. The initiative, part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2018, supports the maritime industry in developing a skilled labor force and enhances diversity. Applications are accepted until April 13, 2026, for five-year designations, with a focus on expanding support for Registered Apprenticeships and partnerships with State Maritime Academies.

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has launched a recruitment drive for its Centers of Excellence program, seeking institutions to train maritime workers as the U.S. faces declining shipbuilding capacity and a shrinking mariner workforce.
The program, authorized in the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, aims to sustain a well-trained labor force and enhance diversity. Less than one percent of new commercial ships are built in the U.S., with only 66 shipyards, eight of which are active.
Applications for five-year designations are open until April 13, 2026. The initiative follows the White House Maritime Action Plan, which recommends expanding support for the Centers of Excellence and other maritime training programs.
