Marine Corps Enhances Amphibious Operations with ACVs During Exercise Steel Knight 25

DEFENSE

The U.S. Marine Corps showcased amphibious combat vehicles (ACVs) and Navy landing craft during exercise Steel Knight 25 at Camp Pendleton, California. This annual exercise, led by the 1st Marine Division, involved the integration of ACVs with landing craft air cushion (LCAC) operations.

The 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, the first to deploy ACVs in 2020, aims for overseas deployment readiness. The ACVs are critical for ship-to-shore operations, particularly in the Pacific region. The Marine Corps has received 300 ACVs, including variants for command and control, personnel, and weapons.

A $184.4 million contract was awarded to BAE Systems for the ACV-30 variant, enhancing combat capabilities. The battalion currently prepares for multiple deployments, ensuring crew safety and operational efficiency through rigorous training, including submerged vehicle training and egress procedures. Marine commanders emphasize the importance of integrating ACVs into amphibious operations as they transition from older AAVs.
