Massachusetts Energy Bill Sparks Nuclear Debate Over Small Modular Reactors in Plymouth

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWERWIND ENERGY

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's proposed "Energy Affordability, Independence & Innovation Act" aims to repeal a 1982 law requiring voter approval for new nuclear power plants, potentially paving the way for small modular reactors (SMRs) in the state. This legislation was advanced by the Legislature's Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy with a 7-0 vote.

The push for SMRs comes as Massachusetts faces an energy crisis, with high electricity rates and delays in offshore wind projects. While some, like 87-year-old Mary Lampert, oppose nuclear energy due to safety concerns related to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, others, like David Butz, advocate for its potential to provide stable energy.

The town of Plymouth, financially impacted by the closure of the Pilgrim plant, is exploring future uses for the site, including the possibility of SMRs. Holtec, the site's owner, is interested in deploying SMRs at other locations, highlighting a community divided on the future of nuclear energy.
