Max Alexander Celebrates Asteroid Naming and Focus on Planetary Defense Photography
Max Alexander, a New Zealand photographer based in the UK, has an asteroid named '6548 Maxalexander' in recognition of his work in space sustainability. The asteroid, discovered in 1988, poses no threat to Earth.
Alexander's current project involves illustrating efforts in planetary defense, including the European Space Agency's Hera mission, which follows NASA's successful DART mission that altered the orbit of asteroid Dimorphos. He is also documenting global impact craters over the next two years, culminating in an exhibition featuring images from the RAMSES spacecraft, which will accompany asteroid Apophis during its close approach to Earth in 2029.
His exhibition, 'Our Fragile Space', aims to influence space policy and promote sustainable practices in the near-space environment, particularly concerning the expected rise in satellites from 10,000 to 100,000 in the next decade. Alexander's work was recognized with the Sir Arthur Clarke Space Achievement Team Media Award in 2025.
