MBSA Transforms Food Waste into Organic Fertiliser for Shah Alam Communities
The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has converted over 291 tonnes of food waste into nearly 28 tonnes of organic fertiliser since 2021. This initiative, started in 2016, aims to reduce landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable urban farming.

Since its inception in 2016, the MBSA initiative has processed more than 291 tonnes of food waste into 9.8 tonnes of organic fertiliser by May 2026. The program targets a substantial 42% of the 700 tonnes of daily waste generated, promoting a circular economy.
Currently, over 2,000 food premises are mandated to separate food waste, which is collected six days a week. The composting process utilizes coconut pulp and enzymes, achieving compost production in three to four days.
The brand 'Foodie Compost' is sold at RM5 per kilogram, supporting community gardens. Future plans include increasing composting machines and exploring Anaerobic Digester and Black Soldier Fly larvae technologies to enhance waste management.
