Mekong Delta Infrastructure Projects Delayed by Land Clearance and Material Shortages
Infrastructure projects in the Mekong Delta are facing significant delays due to land clearance issues and shortages of construction materials. Key initiatives, including the Ho Chi Minh Road and Giai Phong 9 Bridge, are at risk of missing their completion targets as local authorities struggle to resolve land disputes affecting numerous households. These setbacks are hindering socio-economic development in the region.

Key infrastructure projects in the Mekong Delta are delayed primarily due to site clearance bottlenecks and shortages of construction materials. The Ho Chi Minh Road project, spanning 51.9 kilometers, is at risk of missing its revised 2026 completion target, with only 44 kilometers cleared.
Local authorities have yet to resolve about 1.2 kilometers of land clearance, affecting several households and businesses. Meanwhile, Giai Phong 9 Bridge in An Giang Province is also delayed, as over 100 households have not vacated the land.
The project has a budget exceeding VND550 billion, with only VND139 billion disbursed. Additionally, the upgrade of Provincial Road 948, crucial for defense and connectivity, is nearly a year behind due to unresolved clearance for 32 households.
In Tay Ninh Province, the DT823D road project faces similar delays, primarily from slow land handover and legal issues, with only 60-80% of progress achieved. Authorities are under pressure to resolve these issues to support socio-economic development.
