Merritt Island Residents Oppose Proposed LNG Terminal Near Homes at Port Canaveral
Residents of Merritt Island are strongly opposing a proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal near their homes, citing safety concerns during a Canaveral Port Authority meeting. The facility, which would occupy 125 acres at Port Canaveral and is projected to create 50-100 jobs by 2029, has raised fears of health risks and explosions due to its proximity to residential areas. Community discussions are scheduled for February 18 to address these concerns.

Residents of Merritt Island expressed strong opposition to a proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal near their homes during a Canaveral Port Authority meeting. About 20 residents voiced concerns regarding safety and proximity to residential areas as Chesapeake Utilities and Berkshire Hathaway seek to lease 125 acres of port land at 1350 Sea Ray Drive for the facility, valued at $2.8 million.
The LNG plant would provide fuel for cruise ships and the space industry, potentially creating 50-100 jobs by 2029. Community meetings are scheduled for February 18 at Cape Canaveral Community Center for further discussions. Although supporters claim LNG is safe and essential for future energy needs, residents fear health risks and explosions due to the facility's close location to homes.
