Methane Gas Leak Forces Shutdown of Sarawak North Coastal Highway Project in Lawas
A methane gas leak at the Northern Coastal Highway construction site in Lawas has reached critical levels, prompting recommendations for a site shutdown. Continuous monitoring revealed gas concentrations at the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) of 100%.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has advised the shutdown of the Sarawak North Coastal Highway (NCH) construction site due to a methane gas leak detected at 100% LEL. The incident, attributed to drilling operations at a depth of 45 meters, led to monitoring by Hazmat teams over three days.
Initial assessments showed no flammable gas, but subsequent readings indicated oxygen levels dropped and methane levels surged. Authorities confirmed the need for a complete cordon around the area to mitigate safety risks.
The NCH project, valued at RM6.8 billion, is overseen by RECODA and NRDA. Continued monitoring is essential, given the potential hazards associated with high methane concentrations.
