Mexican Army Kills Drug Lord 'El Mencho' in Military Operation, Triggering Nationwide Violence
Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, or 'El Mencho,' was killed in a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. He was injured during a shootout and died during an air transfer to Mexico City. Six cartel members were killed, and two were arrested.
The operation led to widespread violence, including road blockades and burning vehicles across more than seven states. The U.S. provided intelligence for the operation, which aligns with a pressure campaign on Mexico to intensify its anti-drug efforts.
Jalisco's Governor advised residents to stay home, and major airlines canceled flights to affected areas. Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was among Mexico's most wanted criminals.
