Mexico's Military Spending Declines 33% to $13.6 Billion in 2025
Mexico's military budget dropped to $13.6 billion in 2025, marking a 33% decrease from 2024. This shift, occurring under President Claudia Sheinbaum, affects Mexico's global military ranking, reducing its position from 22nd to 30th, despite its defense budget remaining significantly higher than in prior years.

In 2025, Mexico's military expenditures totaled $13.6 billion, a 33% decrease from the 2024 peak of $20.5 billion. This reduction reflects a notable shift in military funding policy under President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration, moving Mexico down in global rankings.
Despite the drop, military spending is still 158% higher than at the onset of the 2006 drug war. The share of military spending relative to GDP increased to 0.7%, with each citizen contributing about $103, up from $47 in 2018.
Mexico's military focus has shifted toward specialized technology over traditional heavy weaponry. This decrease contrasts with rising military investments in South America, indicating a regional divergence in defense spending strategies.
