Michigan Legislature Urged to Fund Selfridge Air National Guard Base Improvements
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is advocating for the Michigan Legislature to approve $152 million for runway enhancements at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, critical for transitioning to a new F-15EX fighter mission. With a June 1 deadline approaching, both the House and Senate have passed measures, but final approval is necessary for funding to proceed.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is pressing the Michigan Legislature to finalize $152 million in runway funding for Selfridge Air National Guard Base by June 1. The House and Senate have separately passed bills, but a combined measure is required for the governor's signature.
The base is transitioning from A-10 and KC-135 aircraft to F-15EX fighters and KC-46 tankers, necessitating $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades over five to seven years. The urgency is highlighted by the need for federal infrastructure improvements to secure the fighter mission before 2028. Success in this funding will enhance Michigan's position in defense manufacturing, as over 600 aerospace suppliers are located in the state, with a significant concentration in Macomb County.
