Michigan Tech's Advanced Power Systems Research Center has been awarded a $7.8M contract by the U.S. Army's Defense Innovation Unit to develop a Vehicle Integrated Power Kit for tactical vehicles, specifically the FMTV A2. The project, starting in early 2025 and lasting 18 months, aims to provide energy for battlefield operations while enhancing expeditionary power capabilities and reducing fuel consumption. Delivery is expected by September 2026.

The U.S. Army's Defense Innovation Unit awarded Michigan Tech's APS LABS a $7.8M contract for the MEGA VIPK project to develop a Vehicle Integrated Power Kit for the FMTV A2 tactical vehicle. The 18-month project, starting in early 2025, focuses on energy generation to support battlefield operations.
The kit will produce over 120kW at 600 volts and comply with Tactical Microgrid Standards, ensuring compatibility with various vehicle types. It also aims to lower fuel consumption by optimizing engine idle times.
Integration, verification, and validation are ongoing, with a delivery expected in September 2026. Local companies and several U.S. military organizations are project partners.
