Microsoft and Brookfield Renewable Partner for Hawks Nest Hydropower Modernization
A long-term agreement between Microsoft and Brookfield Renewable Partners is financing upgrades to the 90-year-old Hawks Nest hydropower plant. This modernization supports Microsoft's objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 while enhancing the plant's output capacity.

Microsoft's partnership with Brookfield Renewable Partners is financing the upgrade of the 90-year-old Hawks Nest hydropower facility in Fayette County, West Virginia. The project, which includes the replacement of two turbine-generator units, aims to boost power output from 102 megawatts to 108.5 megawatts, allowing the plant to supply energy to the grid.
The Hawks Nest plant was originally constructed in 1936 to power Union Carbide's smelting operations. As part of a broader $10 billion investment, Microsoft is also involved in other renewable projects, including the Mount Storm Wind Farm in Grant County, which will see the replacement of its turbines for enhanced efficiency. These initiatives collectively enhance renewable energy contributions while supporting corporate sustainability goals.
