Milner M2 Upgrades to 300 MW Combined Cycle Plant in Alberta
The Milner M2 plant near Grande Cache, Alberta, has completed its combined cycle expansion, boosting capacity to 300 MW. This $300 million project signifies a major step in Alberta's transition from coal to natural gas, enhancing grid stability while reducing carbon emissions by over 60%.

As of June 2026, the Milner M2 natural gas facility in Alberta has successfully completed an upgrade, increasing its capacity from 204 MW to 300 MW through a combined cycle expansion. This project, initiated by Maxim Power Corp., involved an investment exceeding $300 million and utilized heat recovery technology to enhance efficiency.
The upgrade faced delays due to a fire incident in September 2022 but was ultimately commissioned in late 2023. Maxim Power is now focusing on additional generation projects in the area, having secured regulatory approval for further gas-fired capacity and a wind project. The completed facility is expected to play a key role in Alberta's energy landscape, addressing local energy needs while reducing emissions.
