Minnesota Dairy Converts Manure to Renewable Natural Gas
In 2024, Ash Grove Dairy in Minnesota initiated a project converting manure from over 2,000 cows into renewable natural gas (RNG), producing up to 480,000 gasoline-gallon equivalents annually. This facility, developed by Dynamic Renewables and financed through a $22 million partnership led by Clean Energy Fuels Corp, highlights the shift towards lower-emission fuels in agriculture and transportation sectors.

The Ash Grove Dairy facility processes 60,000 gallons of manure daily, converting it into clean biomethane sent to the national pipeline network. At full capacity, it will yield approximately 480,000 gasoline-gallon equivalents per year.
The project aims to address methane emissions from large dairy farms while providing a renewable fuel source for commercial fleets. Anaerobic digesters at the site capture methane, preventing its release and resulting in a negative carbon intensity score.
The digestate produced can be repurposed as animal bedding or fertilizer. This development reflects a growing trend toward renewable energy solutions in agriculture and the broader need to reduce transport-related emissions as regulatory pressures increase.
