MITRE Launches Patent Holiday to Boost Defense Technology Adoption
MITRE has opened its patent portfolio to support industry in accelerating defense technology commercialization. This initiative aligns with a Department of War strategy aimed at enhancing operational use of defense innovations.

MITRE is facilitating access to its intellectual property portfolio, including hundreds of patents and prototypes, to encourage industry adoption of defense technologies. This effort is part of the Defense Patent Holiday program initiated in January, which provides companies with no-fee licenses to evaluate selected patents for two years, assessing their technical and market viability.
By lowering barriers to entry for technology companies, MITRE aims to expedite the transition of critical capabilities to warfighters and enhance mission-oriented innovation. The initiative may significantly impact the speed of commercialization within the defense sector and foster collaboration between government and industry.
