Mobile Baykeeper Advocates for Legislation to Protect Alabama's Coastal Waters
Mobile Baykeeper supports new legislation introduced by State Sen. Chris Elliott and State Rep. Rhett Marques to regulate U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers projects, aiming to protect Alabama's coastal environment. The legislation could prevent the planned dumping of 90 million cubic yards of dredged sediment into Mobile Bay over 20 years, addressing concerns from local stakeholders about its impact on fisheries and tourism.
The proposed measures reference the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1979, enabling the state to impose conditions on the Corps. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also issued new nitrogen oxide standards for gas-fired power plants, expected to reduce emissions but criticized for lacking health benefit assessments. Additionally, the EPA proposed limiting state and tribal authority under the Clean Water Act regarding federally regulated projects.
