Montego Bay Business Leaders Call for Drainage Overhaul After Hurricane Damage
Following Hurricane Melissa's devastation in October, business leaders in Montego Bay are advocating for a comprehensive study of the city's drainage system. Significant damage occurred in areas like Westgreen and Catherine Hall, impacting businesses such as Barnett Tech Park and national retailers.
Mark Kerr-Jarrett of Barnett Limited highlighted the need for expert assistance, suggesting the US Army Corps of Engineers be involved in the costly project to realign waterways. Despite the reopening of 80% of hotels, full recovery is not expected until late 2026. Chamber of Commerce President Jason Russell noted the necessity of learning from this disaster to improve infrastructure for future resilience.
