Morocco Considers Purchase of 400 K2 Black Panther Tanks from South Korea

DEFENSE

Morocco is evaluating the acquisition of up to 400 K2 Black Panther tanks and KM-SAM air defense systems from South Korea, following Minister Ryad Mezzour's visit to Seoul in April 2025. This potential deal is part of a broader modernization effort, as Morocco seeks to diversify its military assets beyond U.S. and European systems.

Currently, Morocco operates a mixed fleet of tanks, including U.S.-made Abrams and older models. The K2 tank is designed for high mobility and includes advanced features suitable for desert environments. If finalized, Morocco would become the first African user of the K2 and KM-SAM systems, enhancing its operational capabilities amid regional tensions with Algeria.
