Morocco to Upgrade WhAP 8×8 Vehicles with Israeli Turrets from Elbit Systems
Morocco plans to equip its Indian-designed WhAP 8×8 armored personnel carriers with Israeli-made turrets by Elbit Systems, upgrading from a standard 30 mm cannon to 105 mm and 120 mm gun systems. This move aims to enhance the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces' adaptability for diverse terrains. Morocco has also signed a $370 million contract for 36 ATMOS 2000 artillery units, signaling a shift in its defense partnerships, as Israel becomes a key arms supplier since 2020.

Morocco will upgrade its WhAP 8×8 armored personnel carriers, designed in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Limited, by equipping them with turrets from Elbit Systems. The vehicles will be modified from their standard 30 mm cannon configuration to include 105 mm and 120 mm gun systems, enhancing their capability akin to light tanks.
This upgrade aligns with Morocco's defense modernization efforts and diversification of military partnerships, particularly with Israel, which has become its third-largest arms supplier. Additionally, Morocco signed a $370 million contract for 36 ATMOS 2000 self-propelled artillery units earlier this year.
