Mozambique Petroleum Law Ratification Expected by Year-End Amid Exploration Push
Mozambique anticipates ratifying its new petroleum law by the end of 2026, aiming to attract investment in offshore exploration. The licensing round will focus on areas 4, 5, and 6, where substantial natural gas resources have been identified, potentially bolstering the country's economic development.

The Mozambique government plans to ratify a new petroleum law by year-end 2026, coinciding with an upcoming licensing round for offshore areas 4, 5, and 6. Significant natural gas resources have been discovered in the Rovuma Basin, increasing estimates from 5 trillion cubic feet in 2009 to 170 trillion cubic feet in 2012.
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, along with Eni S.p.A., Statoil ASA, and Petronas, are key operators in the region, with Anadarko targeting LNG exports from its Afungi development. The project is expected to supply 20 million tonnes per annum of LNG starting in 2018, positioning Mozambique as a major LNG exporter. Challenges include competition from shale gas and other LNG projects globally, as well as the need for improved demand and prices.
