Mozambique President Expects TotalEnergies LNG Project Restart by Early February 2026

NATURAL GAS

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo anticipates that TotalEnergies SE's $20 billion liquefied natural gas project will restart by late January or early February 2026. The project, which halted in 2021 due to insurgent attacks, is crucial for Mozambique's economy, aiming to generate significant revenue to address government debt.

Construction preparations are underway, with TotalEnergies seeking governmental approval for $4.5 billion in additional costs incurred during the project’s suspension. Chapo confirmed that development will continue during the approval process.

Despite security challenges from Islamic State-linked militants in Cabo Delgado, Chapo reported minimal insurgent activity and expressed confidence in the collaboration with international LNG operators. The project’s delays pushed first exports to 2029, amid increasing global supply from other regions.
