MP Challenges UK Defence Ministry on Ajax Program's Initial Operating Capability
Ben Obese-Jecty MP questioned the UK Ministry of Defence regarding the Initial Operating Capability (IOC) declaration for the Ajax program set for November 2025, following a pause due to noise and injury reports. He highlighted longstanding issues with the program, which has seen complexity increase due to 1,200 capability requirements for six vehicle types.
Obese-Jecty noted contradictions in military assessments of vehicle safety, with IOC criteria reportedly met by July 2025 and public IOC declared in November 2025. He raised concerns over potential job losses at General Dynamics' Merthyr Tydfil facility and the implications of continued production.
Additionally, he addressed reported injuries among soldiers during training and called for transparency on internal discussions and compensation claims. The debate also touched on the Army's armoured doctrine and the coherence of its force structure.
