Mumbai Officials Ordered to Relocate Odor-Generating Waste Activities from Residential Areas
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde mandated that all waste processing activities emitting foul odors be relocated at least 500 meters away from residential zones. This directive follows a warning from the Bombay High Court regarding pollution levels and methane emissions at the Kanjurmarg dumping ground.

Eknath Shinde has ordered the relocation of foul odor-generating waste processing activities at the Kanjurmarg site to a minimum distance of 500 meters from residential areas. This decision comes after the Bombay High Court's warning about potential closure of the dumping ground unless pollution and methane emissions are addressed.
The Kanjurmarg facility processes approximately 6,200 tonnes of waste daily, with nearly 190 million metric tonnes treated overall. Shinde emphasized the need for effective implementation of existing anti-odor measures and instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expedite the waste-to-energy project. Failure to comply could lead to increased legal actions and public health risks.
