Mumbai to Establish Compressed Biogas Facility for 350 Tonnes of Organic Waste Daily
Mumbai is set to construct a compressed biogas facility capable of processing 350 tonnes of organic waste daily, reflecting a shift towards renewable energy solutions. The initiative aims to tackle the city's substantial municipal solid waste issue while reducing methane emissions.

The planned compressed biogas facility in Mankhurd will utilize anaerobic digestion to convert segregated organic waste into renewable fuel. This project, supported by a concession agreement with the urban gas distribution utility, targets waste from hotels, vegetable markets, and commercial kitchens.
Mumbai, facing challenges with landfill capacity and methane emissions from untreated organic waste, generates significant volumes of municipal solid waste daily. The success of the facility will rely on a steady supply of clean, source-segregated organic waste, necessitating collaboration from commercial and institutional waste producers. Enhanced public awareness, improved collection systems, and strict segregation enforcement are essential for maximizing the project's impact.
