Murphy City Council Re-elected; Veterans Tribute to Get New Permanent Location

NATURAL GAS

Murphy City Council members were re-elected on May 3, 2025, ensuring continuity in leadership amid ongoing infrastructure improvements and public safety initiatives. The city approved a $63.1 million FY26 budget, a 10% increase, supported by a reduced tax rate of $0.3575.

Infrastructure projects include repairs to McMillen Road and a new home for the Veterans Tribute, which will be located on a boulevard island within the City Hall Complex, featuring a bronze WWII GI statue to be installed in spring 2026. The city allocated up to $23 million for public works projects, while utility rates saw increases: water by 7.3%, sewer by 7.6%, and natural gas by approximately 3%.

Additionally, a $125,000 contract was awarded to LJA Engineering for an overhaul of Murphy's Comprehensive Plan. Challenges remain, including legal disputes over a proposed high-density development and community opposition to certain projects.
