Myanmar Elections in Bago Region Disrupted by Drone Strikes and Bombings on January 11, 2026

DEFENSE

On January 11, 2026, the second phase of Myanmar's military-led elections faced severe disruptions in Bago Region due to targeted attacks. A drone strike in Htantabin Township killed one government official and injured a local election commission member, leading to the closure of polling stations.

The drone reportedly originated from the contested Karenni Kone village. In Minhla Township, an explosion near a polling station, claimed by the Minhla People's Defense Force, occurred shortly before voting commenced.

Despite threats of imprisonment and fines for non-participation, voting continued in a tense atmosphere. These incidents significantly disrupted the Military Commission's election efforts, while the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party secured automatic victories in several other townships.
