Myanmar Junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing to Transfer Military Command to Protégé Ye Win Oo Ahead of Presidential Role
Myanmar's junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is expected to hand over the military's top position to General Ye Win Oo before assuming the presidency in late March. This transition comes amid ongoing conflict and significant casualties since the 2021 coup. The junta has faced criticism for its recent elections, deemed unfair, as it seeks to legitimize its rule. The upcoming parliamentary sessions will begin in March, but analysts predict little change in the violent clashes with ethnic armies and resistance forces.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar is poised to transfer military command to General Ye Win Oo before he assumes the presidency in late March. General Ye Win Oo was promoted to army chief in early March, replacing Vice-Senior General Soe Win.
This move is seen as part of a transition to a nominally civilian government, following a coup in February 2021 that led to nearly 93,300 deaths and 3.7 million displaced. The junta's recent elections faced international criticism as 'neither free nor fair.'
The bicameral national parliament will reconvene in March, with 25% of seats reserved for military representatives. Analysts anticipate ongoing violence as ethnic armies and civilian resistance forces refuse to engage with the military.
