Myanmar to Join Joint Convention on Safety of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management Amid Nuclear Project

Myanmar is set to join the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management linked to its small nuclear power plant project. This announcement was made by Ambassador U Min Thein during a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in Vienna on February 23.

The IAEA is providing technical assistance for nuclear safety in ASEAN countries, and the meeting covered the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Myanmar has also expressed appreciation for IAEA's support and previously joined the Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency in 2022.
