Myanmar to Resume LNG Imports in 2026 After Four-Year Hiatus
Myanmar is set to resume liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports in 2026 after receiving half a cargo last month, ending a four-year pause due to civil unrest. Kpler forecasts Myanmar will import 0.4 million tons of LNG in 2026, supported by the restart of two LNG-to-power projects: the 200-MW Thanlyin power plant and the 300-MW Thaketa power plant.
The Dapeng Princess tanker transported LNG from the Bintulu LNG plant in East Malaysia, arriving at Thilawa FSU in Myanmar. The Thilawa facility received the cargo on November 16, with discharge on November 23 for generator testing. Myanmar began LNG imports in June 2020 but halted them after a military coup in 2021, having received a total of 550,000 metric tons prior to the recent shipment.
