Mystery of Gold Lost in Manila Bay from WWII Salvage Operations

DEFENSE

During World War II, Americans and Filipinos dumped gold and silver into Manila Bay to prevent Japanese capture. Despite Japanese recovery efforts, only a fraction of the treasure, mainly silver, was retrieved.

Post-war, the American navy attempted salvage operations with underwater metal detectors but did not disclose their findings. In 1947, two Americans salvaged silver pesos, while a group of U.S. Navy veterans reportedly recovered 300,000 silver coins and 60 gold bars, but the ship carrying these treasures sank in a storm.

Since then, various salvage attempts by the U.S. and Philippine governments have estimated recoveries at around eight million pesos. Treasure hunters face risks due to difficult diving conditions and legal penalties. It is believed that several million pesos may still remain in the bay, though the fate of the gold remains unknown.
