Nairobi County Proposes New Conservancy Fee to Fund Waste Management
Nairobi City County plans to introduce a conservancy fee in water bills aiming to generate over Sh5 billion for solid waste management. This initiative addresses the ongoing funding deficits in waste collection and disposal services amidst urban growth challenges.

Nairobi City County is considering a conservancy fee to be added to monthly water bills, targeting over Sh5 billion for solid waste management. This fee aims to establish a sustainable funding mechanism for waste collection and disposal, addressing the city's significant waste management challenges, where only 45-55% of the 3,600 tons of daily waste is collected.
The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company will primarily act as an administrative body for collecting and remitting the fee to the County Government. The proposal reflects a shift towards a circular economy, promising cleaner neighborhoods and improved sanitation standards. Stakeholder consultations are underway, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts among government agencies and residents to tackle waste management effectively.
