Namibia to Host CTBTO's First Integrated Field Exercise in Africa in 2026

DEFENSE

Namibia will host the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization's Integrated Field Exercise in October 2026, becoming the first African nation to do so. The fictional scenario will involve no actual nuclear activities and aims to test global readiness for verifying nuclear explosions.

More than 250 international experts are expected to participate, injecting millions into the local economy and enhancing Namibia's role in nuclear non-proliferation. The exercise's location in the Erongo Region was chosen for its geological features and infrastructure.

The project is anticipated to cost around €8 million, benefiting tourism and service sectors. Namibia, a significant uranium producer, has a vested interest in peaceful nuclear use and has previously chaired key CTBTO committees. The exercise is part of Africa's commitment to a nuclear-weapon-free continent, reinforcing Namibia's leadership in disarmament discussions.
