Naples Pier Pilings Repurposed for Offshore Reef Enhancement
Naples has deployed 59 pilings from the demolished pier to the Wasmer reef, enhancing marine biodiversity off the coast. This initiative prevents landfill waste and commemorates the pier lost to Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The city of Naples has deployed 59 pilings, weighing 300 tons, from the demolished Naples Pier to the Wasmer reef, located 10 miles offshore. This action contributes to the establishment of a new underwater ecosystem and is part of a $23.5 million pier rebuild project scheduled for completion in July 2027.
The pilings deployment was overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and executed by Shoreline Foundation, Inc. and Turrell, Hall & Associates (THA). The new pier will feature larger pilings and an accessible design to enhance resilience against storms and protect wildlife. The project also marks the eighth reef enhancement at the Wasmer site, which has thrived since its establishment in 2015.
