NASA Advances Commercial Satellite Relay with PExT Operations Expansion
NASA's Polylingual Experimental Terminal (PExT) has transitioned from demonstration to extended operations, aiming to enhance interoperability between satellite networks. This initiative is pivotal for integrating commercial providers into near-Earth communication systems, enhancing resilience and operational efficiency.

NASA's Polylingual Experimental Terminal (PExT) has completed its demonstration phase and will continue operations until April 2027, seeking new partnerships and capability demonstrations. Launched in 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, PExT has successfully enabled data transfers across both commercial and government satellite systems, including Viasat and SES Space and Defense.
Future operations will involve testing direct-to-Earth links using SSC Space's global ground station network. Additionally, NASA is partnering with Aalyria Technologies to enhance mission communication support through shared software frameworks, building on prior collaborations under the Hybrid Space Architecture program. This initiative represents a significant shift towards utilizing commercial satellite networks for government communications.
