NASA Proposes 10,000 Femtosatellites for Saturn's Rings Exploration
NASA has awarded $3.2 million for a Phase I NIAC project to deploy a swarm of 10,000 femtosatellites to study Saturn's rings. This initiative aims to gather in-situ data to address unresolved questions about the rings' formation and dynamics, with potential science operations projected for the 2040s.

NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) will fund a project involving 10,000 femtosatellites, designed to explore Saturn's rings. This Phase I initiative, led by Dr. Michael Rubenstein, will utilize advanced swarm robotics to enable active steering mechanisms, significantly enhancing data collection capabilities.
The mission aims to provide unprecedented insights into the rings' composition, age, and behavior. Additionally, another NIAC project proposes a mothership for in-situ sampling of the rings. While development is in the early stages, missions could potentially start science operations in the 2040s, emphasizing the long-term vision of NIAC and the importance of robotic exploration.
