National Highways Launches UK's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered VMS at M6 Lancaster Services
The UK's first fuel cell-powered variable message signage (VMS) unit has been deployed by National Highways at M6 Lancaster Services. Powered by an Efoy Pro 12000 direct methanol fuel cell, the VMS displays live fuel prices and offers a low-emission alternative to diesel generators. Supported by Fuel Cell Systems and Swarco UK & Ireland, this installation aims to enhance roadside infrastructure sustainability by providing reliable off-grid power while minimizing environmental impact.

National Highways has deployed the UK's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered variable message signage (VMS) unit at M6 Lancaster Services. The VMS uses an Efoy Pro 12000 direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) for off-grid power to display live fuel prices.
This solution addresses the need for reliable, low-voltage power without mains electricity, replacing diesel generators that produce significant emissions. The DMFC operates as a smart battery charger, maximizing efficiency and reducing refueling costs. The successful installation, supported by Fuel Cell Systems and Swarco UK & Ireland, demonstrates fuel cell technology's potential to enhance sustainability in the UK's transport infrastructure.
