NATO Selects Saab GlobalEye to Replace E-3 Sentry Fleet
NATO has chosen Saab's GlobalEye to replace its E-3 Sentry aircraft, marking a significant shift towards European technology. This decision, valued at over €5 billion, signifies the end of Boeing's exclusive AWACS supply since 1988, enhancing NATO's surveillance capabilities.

NATO has selected the Saab GlobalEye to replace its fleet of 14 E-3 Sentry aircraft, with plans for an order of 10 to 12 units at approximately €550 million each, totaling over €5 billion. This procurement marks a historic transition from U.S.-supplied aircraft to European technology, following the U.S. withdrawal from the E-7 Wedgetail program in June 2025.
The GlobalEye integrates advanced AESA radar and multi-domain capabilities, offering superior performance and lower operating costs compared to the aging E-3 fleet. The decision reflects an evolving defense landscape and enhances NATO's operational flexibility while addressing maintenance challenges with legacy systems. An increased reliance on European capabilities may lead to enhanced collaboration within the alliance and impact future procurement strategies.
