NAVFAC EXWC Develops PETS III Mobile System for PFAS Water Treatment at Naval Air Facility Atsugi

NAVFAC EXWC has developed the PETS III, a mobile system designed to treat PFAS-impacted water from fire suppression systems. This trailer-mounted system targets low to medium concentrations of PFAS in water contaminated with aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), aiming to prevent the disposal of about 710,000 gallons of such water, saving an estimated $2.6 million during its deployment at Naval Air Facility Atsugi.

The PETS III incorporates a modular treatment train featuring pre-treatment, filtration, and sorption media. The system processes water through various methods including screening, foam fractionation, and ion exchange.

Developed in-house over three years, the PETS III enhances portability and user-friendliness compared to previous designs, following advancements from the Army Engineer Research and Development Center. Deployment began in October 2024, with potential for additional units based on demand.
